All about AquaSan

AquaSan (also branded PoolSan for some markets,, including the EU since Brexit) is a safe and easy to dose liquid used in commercial swimming pools, spas and hydrotherapy pools. Chlorine, a biocide (kills and prevents bacteria reproducing) and an oxidiser (breaks down bather waste like sweat) is replaced with AquaSan, the biocide and Regenerator a chlorine free oxidiser which introduces active oxygen to the water.

Put simply, AquaSan is ionisation in a bottle. The germ killing and controlling properties of the natural mineral ions of metals have been used for thousands of years. Roman soldiers kept their water fresh with a silver coin in the flask whilst today silver plasters, silver treated fabrics and copper door handles in hospitals are all used to kill bacteria. More recently, copper and silver have shown to be highly effective against Covid 19.

AquaSan is unique in two ways; firstly it contains not just copper and silver but also gold, aluminium and zinc and this blend of metal ions prevents the growth of pathogens. Secondly, rather than using a traditional in-situ ionising system such as may be found in your closed water systems, the base ingredients are produced from the elements and blended during the manufacturing process.  The unique blend is then locked into a solution to form AquaSan liquid. Because the ions are in a liquid form they can be added quickly and easily by an automated dosing system, as demand requires  

Regenerator is the chlorine free oxidiser that introduces active oxygen alongside AquaSan to break up bather waste. Regenerator is a widely used chlorine free oxidising and shock treatment.

AquaSan and Coronavirus

The latest independent lab testing confirms that AquaSan and Regenerator inactivated 99.99% of coronavirus in simulated pool conditions in less than 5 minutes. That’s three times faster than 3ppm of free chlorine, which took 15 minutes to achieve a 99.99% (4 log) reduction in the same testing.

 

The main transmission routes for Covid-19 in pools and spas are through aerosol or airborne, contact with contaminated surfaces and via water ingestion/inhalation. Spas, hydrotherapy pools and pools with water features provide a greater risk of aerosol transmission - SARS-CoV-2 is known to last in aerosols for up to three hours (Doremalen et al 2020) so it can be directly inhaled by those in the vicinity. 


Spa pools also have a much higher ratio of bathers to water volume than swimming pools, so the risk is the water has a higher concentration of viruses from bathers that can be carried in aerosols. As with Legionella, potentially contaminated aerosols may be generated by some pools and spas even when not in use.


Aggregation (clumping) of viruses, urea and bather waste in water can reduces the efficacy of some common pool biocides. You can be confident knowing AquaSan inactivates 99.99% of coronavirus three times faster than 3ppm of chlorine
